Blood scattered across my face, warm streams slipping from my cheeks to my chin to darken the earth beneath my feet. I let it remain, my gaze settling on the lifeless body before me. His limbs twisted in a final show of fear, fingers still curled as if they were trying to hold on to a mercy that had already slipped away from him. Only moments ago, he had been kneeling at my feet, his knees pressing into the dust, voice shaking as he begged me to spare him, to show mercy, to let him live, promising regret with the desperation of a man who had just understood the real weight of death. Yet even then his eyes had searched for escape instead of truth.
